 KILLEKILL PODCAST #19: DEZ WILLIAMS

This is a live set recorded at KILLEKILL ELECTRIX on May, 16th 2014 at Suicide Circus. What a smasher!

——————–

Holy Island, an island off of the coast of North Wales is where Dez Williams begun spinning wax at an early age and now maintains his humble analogue / digital studio. Isolated from the marketing, fashion and pretentious attitudes that plague the music industry, Dez is free to express himself through his machines. Safe from this environment he is unconstrained and has no urge to conform with any ideal or aesthetic and thus his electronic music is pure self expression. A window into his soul. His sound is perhaps a product of his daily grind with boredom, escapism, events in his life and a long term passion for technology, horror and science fiction. Inspired by many of the classic Chicago / Detroit / electro / techno producers, like the finest, his sound is unique, uncompromising and unpredictable. His vision of techno is deep and futuristic with a heavy dose of funk. Dez’s passion for sound and the darker side of the human spirit compels him to create tracks on an almost daily basis and he sits on an incredibly vast archive of cassettes, mini-discs and CD’s of his work. Yet his reclusive nature dictates that his release schedule remains sparse. His tracks can range from driving techno, to melancholy and dark synthesizer orchestrations, ghostly deep listening, straight up electro cuts and beyond. Sometimes simple, sometimes complex, within his sounds are vast amounts of detail for the listener to decipher. Emotions transmitted through mathematics and code. Williams‘ tracks have found their way into the sets of DJ’s like Dave Clarke, Adam X, John Peel, Ellen Allien, Mike Dred and Rob Hall. He has constantly retained an underground / cult fanbase. His debut LP ‚Elektronik Religion‘ for the SCSI label was hailed as „One of the very few truly great electro albums of the new century“. Dez remains true to the underground and simply creates for the love and need to do so. The mark of a true artist. He continues to DJ and play live sets across the world and has had releases on a variety of labels including Acruacreee, Ai, Cheap, SCSI, Blase, Voodoo, Minimal Soul & Earwiggle…

KILLEKILL PODCAST #18: BORIS

The new podcast in our series comes from the great DJ BORIS, recorded live at the Killekill 015 record release/10 years of Pacotek party on november 22nd, 2013.
DJ Boris is kind of a charismatic, multifunctional weapon in the Berlin club life. His musical roots reach back to the mid 80s, when he lived in New York for four years where he absorbed the unique spirit of the seminal club Paradise Garage weekend after weekend. From the Club’s mentor Larry Levan Boris learned to believe in his musical intuition as well as a broad musical spectrum, which nowadays ranges from Disco, Hi-NRG, Post-Punk and (Kraut-) Rock to House and Techno, all of which Boris loves to throw into one set. „Music was most important for Levan. He was uncompromising and he knew how to convey it. That’s what I’m trying to achieve, too, when I’m djing.“

Many years later, Boris became a resident at Panorama Bar’s first incarnation in Berlin, where he was able to build a loyal following by playing long sets lasting until noon. „The crowd is always a lot more receptive for music at the end than at the beginning. That’s when I rather have the opportunity to present unusual stuff and that’s when I’m able to let my feelings run freely.“
After the old OstGut/Panorama Bar closed, Boris played in almost every club in Berlin, but when the follow up club Berghain opened its doors in 2004, he quickly focused on playing out here again. From 2005 till 2010 he had another musical platform, as he was taking care of the label Careless Records as an A&R. As a DJ, he is not exactly keen on refining a certain genre, but rather to push music with a certain twist.

KILLEKILL PODCAST #17: D’MARC CANTU

D’MARC CANTU is someone whose music we have been in love with for a long time already. Finally we had him play at our ACID IST FERTIG night at Suicide Circus Berlin on oct 25th, 2013! And here is the recording of his massive set. Enjoy!D’Marc Cantu started working on what would later be known as JakBeat in late 2000 after being introduced to Ghostly alum JTC. In keeping with the raw sounds that he’s known for D’Marc uses analog gear, meticulously gathered samples and crafty production work to further define JakBeat, a sound that encompasses the emotion and simplicity of early electronica but does not limit itself to just one genre.
In 2005 D’Marc and JTC created 2amfm, taking cues from house, techno, acid, electro and hip-hop, to produce such tracks as Sweatbox and Desolate Cities. D’Marc later teamed up the Traxx and JTC to create X2 a super group of JakBeat aficionados, releasing Time Elevation Rhythm and House not House. As a solo artist he has released a number of singles and EPs such as 2009’s Another Number on Crème and 2011’s Set Free, hailed as a modern classic, on MOS. 2011 also saw the release of his first album, Fallen, on Crème Organization and just months later MOS would release his second album A New World. Most recently he has taken on remix duties, providing a JakBeat twist to tracks by Alis, G String, Samaan and Ricardo Tobar all in 2013 alone.
His most current project, Some Fantasies are Good, was accompanied by a DVS1 remix and released on the new Montreal based label Forbidden Planet in mid 2013. With no signs of slowing down he looks to continue to push his unique sound, look for him to release works on Nation, Ansatz, Shaddock, Sequencias and Echovolt in the coming year.dmarccantu.com
